Consumer awareness about food adulteration and its consequences: A cross-sectional survey in Dhaka city

Combating food adulteration is a great challenge in Bangladesh. A cross-sectional survey was carried out among the 384 consumers from different areas in Dhaka city selected by using simple random sampling technique during 15th to 30th November 2018. The study’s objective was to evaluate consumer awareness of prevalent food adulterants in Dhaka city. The majorities of the respondents were aged below 20 years, 48.0% were student and 31.7 % were service holder. The study showed that advertisements in various media especially television and Facebook contributed the highest responses regarding the sources of knowing about the products information. The knowledge, attitudes and practice about food adulteration was more significant among the respondents. More than eighty percent (84.2%) respondents were aware about the ill effects of food adulteration like intestine pain (44.2%), tuberculosis and cancer (30.8%) and dysentery (32.5%). The correlation between educational qualification of the respondents and the satisfaction of the product quality was significant at <0.05, whereas the correlation between educational qualification and check the product expiry date or quality awareness program was not significant at 0.05 level. In this study more than sixty percent of respondents said quality awareness program is effective for awareness of food adulteration. In order to create consumer awareness about food adulteration it is necessary to take effective measure to disseminate knowledge and to control adulteration.
